Another chapter in the ELIZABETHAN renaissance

The fully restored ELIZABETH following her relaunch

On the 16th September 2021 we published an article in SWS entitled Tumlaren Sailing New Zealand Style. It told the story of the story of Bill Cole’s adventures racing ELIZABETH a Tumlaren, off shore in New Zealand during the 1960’s. This was the first we had heard of the little craft with a big heart… and we assumed that would be the end of the story.

We flagged the story on Instagram and got a comment from Peter Brookes the well known English- now New Zealand Yacht restorer. “I have her sitting outside my workshop!”

Well despite Covid, things then moved fast and she became the property Mangonui residents Phil Homes and Pip Todd who both had considerable experience sailing and restoring Tumlarens in Melbourne. Their account of the work they did was covered in three further articles in SWS.

The beginning of the restoration

In the last of these articles we wrote “Well, here’s the final chapter"…”. Well actually that turns out not to be the case.

Phil and Pip never intended to keep ELIZABETH for long. Given their long and deep connections to the Tumlaren Class they really just wanted to save her.

As Pip Writes…

It was always the whole restoration project and saving her from the scrapyard for Phil . We have raced her with our local fleet but she really needs to be with other classics and sadly they are just too far away to be with regularly.

So ELIZABETH, the newly restored Tumlaren is on the market.

Here are details…

Tumlaren 8.3m classic yacht

$38,500.00 NZD

The Tumlaren was drafted by Swedish designer Knud Reimers in 1936.

This Tumlaren was built in Auckland to the original plans during the late 1940s-50s and been completely restored as a project in 2022 by a qualified NZ shipwright. The kauri hull has been splined and epoxied. The wooden ribs were sound with the original copper rivets being retained.

The lead keel was removed and the copper bolts have been checked.

An epoxy glass plywood deck was laid over new laminated deck beams. Varnished coamings, a bespoke forward hatch and bronze port lights are highlights of the cabin top. A new rudder and laminated varnished tiller were built as part of the restoration

The cockpit and interior plywood floor, up to the mast step, is fitted for easy removal. Varnished coamings finish off the interior. This yacht comes with a new aluminium mast and boom. The stainless steel rigging attaches to internal stainless steel chainplates. A new sail wardrobe consists of a partially battened main, genoa, no1 jib and a spinnaker. A removable hardwood bracket carries an outboard engine.

Inventory includes:

Rocna anchor, steering compass, fitted manual bilge pump, range of sheets, mainsail cover, canvas cockpit cover, 2 deck winches, 1 cabintop winch, winch handles, 3HP Yamaha outboard, a purpose-built steel cradle (not shown in the photos).

The Tumlaren has had a worldwide resurgence in recent years as a distinctive, practical, short crewed classic yacht suitable for racing, day sailing and cruising. In Melbourne there is now a growing number of restored Tumlaren sailing as a one design fleet racing within the classic class.

This beautifully restored classic yacht is sitting in Northland, New Zealand.
