The Cup Regatta 2020 (sic)

On the northern waters of Port Phillip last weekend the first four races of
the 2020 (noTE: No typo) Cup Regatta
were held in overcast weather
and fickle breezes.

This is the 14th consecutive running of the event which was postpone from November last year. The Classic Yacht Association of Australia, much to their credit, have refused to let it slip into the same dark hole that has swallowed so many events in the last 12 months. With a revamped format of 4 round the sticks races over a weekend followed by a passage race to Geelong a month later the CYAA has showed innovation well beyond the efforts of some of the more “Royal” yacht Clubs. The hope to be back to the traditional format of three days sailing in early November later this year.

The week before the event was due to kick off Victoria was frozen, in its third complete lockdown, thankfully only for 5 days but this meant that many plans were thrown into chaos with boats trapped on the hard, crew travel arrangements stymied and consequently fleet numbers were well down. Undaunted, Peter Costolloe pressed ahead with the regatta, and those who made it to the start line didn’t regret it.

The Results so far are posted below but here’s a short video showcasing some of the craft in the Division One Fleet.

Delayed from last year, here are a few of the boats in 14th consecutive edition of this great event. Go to www.southernwoodenboats.com for the full story.

Look out for a report of the 32 Mile Passage Race in about a month’s time.
