Photo Time

Its that time of year when the sailing world casts its vote on the best photographic Images of the last 12 months. And, as usual, SWS scans the entries, looking through a traditional sailing lens.

More than 130 yacht racing photographers representing 31 nations submitted an image for this year’s photo contest. Of the eighty images in the initial selection, eight are loosely of traditional/timber boats. This is down by two, from our unscientific survey in 2022.

Interestingly twenty of the eighty images are of foiling boats. Is this the writing on the wall?

Here’s a little bit about each of this Year’s “Classic Boat” images

SKS Championship Skûtsjesilen by TOM COEHOORN

Tom Writes…

“A ‘skûtsje’ on a stormy day during the 11-days regatta ‘SKS Championship Skûtsjesilen 2024’. This ship called 'De Twee Gebroeders' ('The Two Brothers') is a former cargo ship from 1913 that was used to transport peat, manure and other cargo to the farms in the Netherlands. To do this, the ships had to enter shallow waters. That is why the ships were made long and flat. Nowadays, they are used for regattas. Nice detail; the ship is now sailed by two brothers; Skipper Jeroen Pietersma on the left at the helm and his brother and advisor Gerhard Pietersma on the right.

The Lady Anne by OLIOL ESTEVE

Oriol writes…

The first day of the regatta was cancelled due to light wind. The boats floated with sails unfurled in a calm sea without a breath of wind. in conditions like these you have to do your best to make the most of days without action, splashing, boats healing or broken sails...

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez by THOMAS CAMPION

Thomas Writes…

I chose this photo because of the number of sails. I find that the background is just as interesting as the first one, even more so. it is difficult to quantify the number of boats in this photo.

In the starting area of the 12 MJI Vintage, an American paguebot is moored in the bay of Cannes. This is followed by a duel with the other 12MJI Vim.

6mr at the Champagne Regatta Helsinki by PATRICK BLOM

Patrick writes…

The final day of the regatta was very nice. I first shot mainly with the tele lens, but I also wanted to try some wide angle shots in between. Not that easy to drive the boat solo and to shoot the sailing boat from a very close distance.

Voile de St. Tropez by TOBIAS STOERKLE

Tobias writes…

The 2024 edition of Voile de St. Tropez took place in challenging weather conditions, but I ended up with plenty of excellent photos. This is just one of them.

Viola at the XVII Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta in Barcelona by NICO MARTINEZ

Nico writes…

At the morning meeting, the Race Committee gave the weather report and announced 2 metre waves. We went out with the hope that the report would be fulfilled, and it was really spectacular, with ideal conditions for a good day, and this for me is the best shot of the day.
