Two Months Out from The Cup Regatta

November seems to come around fast!

Last week, the Classic Yacht Association of Australia learned that it had secured support from the Joe White Bequest to run the 19th Cup Regatta in 2025. This is the second year in a row that the event has benefitted from the Bequest and hopefully its just the start of a long and fruitful relationship.

If you don’t know about Joe White, his name is synonymous with Yachting in Victoria. From beginnings on Lake Wendouree in Ballarat he would go on to campaign a succession of yachts from the pen of Charlie Peel named Acrospire that would compete for the prestigious Sayonara Cup in 1928, 1930 and 1931. He was also a long serving Commodore of the St. Kilda Yacht Club, later the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS).

We wrote an detailed article about this history, for last years event that you can read about HERE

The Joe White Bequest was formed in 1959 following Joe White’s passing. The trust aims to provide distributions to Victorian hospitals and other benevolent institutions.

The CYAA will mark the support of the Joe White Bequest or the 2025 Cup Regatta through the awarding of Joe White Bequest trophies recognising the restoration and maintenance of classic yachts and boats.

Regatta Planning is well underway. Classic Yacht sailors from around Australia and abroad will meet once again in November on the waters of Port Phillip celebrating its 19th edition.

The big news is that the CYAA have decided to include, for the first time, “Modern Classics” in what has become a must do event for the Victorian traditional boat sailor.

The event will provide a mix of sailing and social activities that will fill the weekend, for both those racing and those looking to take things a little easier.

As is the custom, an invitation will be extended to our friends at the CYANZ, and we hope to see many of them in Melbourne once again.

Further details and entry information will be posted soon, so mark it in your diary now for the Melbourne Cup weekend, October 31 to November 2.
