Ed Psaltis-From Wooden Boats to winning the Big Ones.

I was pleasantly surprised this week, when I got an email from Ed Psaltis. The winner of the infamous 1998 Sydney-Hobart (and much else) was commenting on last week’s article about the 1972 Race. We exchanged thoughts, and then I asked him if he would be interested in chatting to SWS about how things have changed in the 40 plus years he has been sailing off shore. He generously offered his time and the result is the half hour podcast below.

I’ve met a few famous sailors over the years, and often, the reality hasn’t lived up to my (perhaps over optimistic and breathless) expectations. As someone once said… “never confuse talent and intelligence”

Well, it’s reassuring to know that not all the top sailors are like that. Ed is tough but considered, practical but romantic, exacting but inclusive. If more people were like him, sailing would be a better sport.

We hope you enjoy the chat!
