Searching for SANTANDA

We received this request from Erin in California this week

I am the Senior Brand Director at Visit Newport Beach, and I’m working on a historical campaign for Newport Beach’s 120th birthday next year. I came across your amazing article about the history of Humphrey Bogart’s boat, the Santana.  I’m curious, do you know who currently owns the boat by chance? I ask because we are working on a shoot for this campaign and are going to re-create images of Bogie and Bacall on the Santana and it would be SO amazing to film on the actual boat!

I know this is a long shot, but any information you have would be greatly appreciated! I know you all are in Australia but I am looking to film on a similar-looking boat here in Newport Beach, California. If you happen to have any Southern California leads, I’ll gladly take those!

Thanks so much and chat soon,

Erin.

Can any readers help?

New Owner for FRANCES?

We received an email from Vicsail this week listing the famous Melbourne based Digby 8mr FRANCES. Having raced against her on Port Phillip for during the 90s & 2000s it peaked my interest. I then noticed this post on instagram.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DPj5BKPkxtl/?igsh=ajA0N2NlcTBoMWdx

Showing the current custodian of DEFIANCE (the Sydney based 8mr), the current custodian of FRANCES, Peter Johns and the grandson of the designer, Peter Digby sitting happily below decks on the advertised boat.

The listing has now disappeared from the Vicsail Website!

What conclusions can we draw?

Cup Regatta Ticketing!

Why are Classic Boat sailors famous for always leaving administration to the last minute? Perhaps it’s a reaction to having to be well prepared in every other part of their sailing lives!

With that in mind we had this request from the organisers of the Cup Regatta Party…

Organisation for the Friday night social is going well. We just need people to buy tickets. Just wondering if you could possibly put something specifically in your weekly news that final numbers need to be given to the Paella caterers on the 17th October. Thus to be sure we have enough food for everyone, it would be appreciated if tickets could be purchased as soon as possible. If you know you are coming, don't delay - get a ticket!! It would be a great shame for people to go hungry if we cater for 120 and have 160 buy tickets at the last minute!

So here’s a reminder!

BOONGOWN update

One of the most popular articles we published in 2023 was the story of the saving of BOONGOWN. There was something about one man’s epic struggle to restore the craft that appealed to our readers. Well, Malcolm Lambe sent us a couple of pictures this week which indicate that the work (as always with wooden boats) is ongoing. These images were made at the Pittwater Aquatic Club where Malcolm has slipped the beautiful EOS

At SWS we like auctions!

We also like the work and attitude of Peter Kerr at Deagon Slipways. So when we saw a Clem Master’s (who founded the yard in the 1950’s) boat for sale via Marine Auctions , we thought it’s information worth sharing!

UK Heritage moving to Europe?

Another great free article from Classic Boat Magazine in the UK, this time by Barry Pickthall.

Bradley Cain and his team from Sandycove Boat Yard in Newlyn Cornwall returned from this year’s Classic yacht festival in the Golfe du Morbihan shaking their heads in exasperation. “Everywhere I looked I found British classic yachts sailing under French flags. It’s all very dispiriting” He lamented.

We Brits have been losing much of our maritime heritage to the Mediterranean for years. Now our classics like the 3-masted barque Kaskelot, one of the largest wooden ships still in commission, are simply crossing the Channel into more appreciative hands where the boats are cherished not only by their new owners, but by the regional ports they reside in. That’s because they are seen as positive marketing tools. Countries like France also have the skilled workforce and cost-effective facilities to maintain them.
