The word that comes to mind is FREEDOM

a sailor is an artist whose medium is the wind.
live passionately even if it kills you because
something is going to kill you anyway.
the defining responsibility of the artist is to go beyond the edge of human experience and send back reports

--Webb Chiles

While not a wooden boat sailor, Webb Chiles, espouses so many of the values that we hold dear. Things like , self-sufficiency, respect for the ocean, minimalism and adventure….. mind you he himself doesn’t like this expression

Amateurs seek adventure; professionals seek to avoid them. I have always sought to avoid them. They happen anyway — but planning and preparation keep them to a minimum.”

We love this eight minute video!

Webb Chiles, born 1941, is an American sailor and author noted for his offshore sailing. He has completed six circumnavigations, several of them single-handed, and is the author of seven books. He has been married six times. The latest circumnavigation was in a Moore 24

Leaving in October 1975 from San Diego, he set the record for the fastest solo circumnavigation in his Ericson 37 Egregious, with an eastwards passage around the three capes in 203 days. In this journey he also became the first American to round Cape Horn solo.

“What matters is action. Not to think about writing, but to write. Not to think about sailing, but to sail. Not to think about loving, but to love.”
