UNDINE -Valuing the Priceless
Some of you may have been following the AWBF’s project to restore the Derwent Class yacht UNDINE.
Launched in 1948, she was built by Don Colbourn of Pirie Street, New Town, she has a rich history in the yachting world. She has sailed alongside the other 20+ D-class vessels during the 1950-1960s, and garnished considerable attention and accolades. Her name, inspired by mythological characters, adds a touch of whimsy to her undeniable elegance.
After a brief hiatus, the D-class yachts are making a remarkable comeback in the local Tasmanian yachting world, and UNDINE is poised to be at the forefront of this revival. With her extensive restoration undertaken by the world-class Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin, UNDINE has been brought back to life, ensuring she is ready to compete against her rivals once more. The boat is the first ever owned by the AWBF who has funded her restoration thanks to the generous support of a Tasmanian philanthropist.
The restoration of UNDINE is nothing short of remarkable. She has undergone a complete inner hull restoration, construction of new decks and deck beams, a new cabin and forehatch, internal fit-out, existing deadwood and ballast removed and refitted. Her hull has been fully refurbished, and her interior has been meticulously painted. The rigging and mast have also received a full restoration. In essence, she has been rejuvenated to a state of pure perfection, making her absolutely ready for the upcoming sailing season.
As the work is nearing completion, the AWBF is now welcoming any enquiries regarding her future! She will be launched on February 10th 2024, as part of the Kettering Wooden Boat Rally, and all funds from her sale will go directly to the AWBF.
And if you think this pearl of Australian yachting history might be for you… remember that its a condition of sale that UNDINE must remain in Tasmanian waters, and must compete regularly against her rival D-class vessels and attend future Australian Wooden Boat Festivals.
