Festival News-From Both Sides of the Tasman

The big news this week, is that the Auckland Wooden Boat Festival is returning next year for its second iteration, building on the success of 2024.

Remember when they turned Jellicoe Harbour into a sea of wooden boats? It’s happening again! The Festival will be back in full force for 2026, as part of Moana Auckland.

  • 13-15 March 2026 at the Viaduct Events Centre and Jellicoe Harbour

  • In 2024, the inaugural year, you brought over 200 boats, models and memorabilia to the festival, and we hosted 11,600 visitors through the gates

  • Once again, the event will be presented in close partnership with the New Zealand Maritime Museum and Tino Rawa Trust.

With a huge array of New Zealand’s world leading wooden boat culture on show, you should mark your diaries, book your travel and tell your friends!

If you are considering being involved now’s the time to get your expression of interest in.

Visit the Festival Website and complete a simple form.

And there’s a great link here between the two big festivals on either side of the Tasman. This week the Australian Wooden Boat Festival released its latest “Boat Folk” film, the subject of which is the storied. NGATAKI. Michelle Khan and Tony Stevenson brought the vessel over to Hobart along with a container load of treasures from the Tino Rawa Trust. You can listen to Tony tell the tale of this famous boat in the video below.

And while we are the subject of the AWBF… Can we ask for two minutes of your time to cast a vote for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in the 2025 Tasmanian Tourism Awards People’s Choice Award!

Its an easy process to vote. Click HERE. It will just take a moment!

If the AWBF can win the award, apart from the prestige, it helps with fundraising and grant applications, hopefully leading to a richer and more successful event in 2027.
