Help Needed! Naming the Schooner

1946 race start.jpg

This week, we received an email from Tony Blake , the renowned New Zealand Marine Artist.

Tony has been a great supporter of the relationship between Classic Yacht sailors on both sides of the Tasman. When he’s not creating his stunning oil paintings, he’s often seen on the Waitemata, at the helm of the THELMA the 1897 Logan Gaff Cutter.

Tony Writes…

I am presently working on the composition for a painting of the 1946 Sydney Hobart start. I have included a photo taken from leeward just after the start with MORNA leading the fleet, SAGA is just to windward of her, but further to leeward and astern of MORNA is a staysail schooner with a wishbone rig on the foremast. Looks very similar to WINDWARD II when she was rigged as a staysail schooner (your Southern Wooden Boat Sailing article). However WINDWARD II is not listed amongst the starters. Would you know who the yacht could be?? She certainly looks like part of the race fleet.

So, we thought we should put the question out to the readership….

What’s the Name of the vessel under the red arrow?

There is a prize of a copy of Russell Kenery’s book “Curious Voyages” for the most useful answer.

And to get you started here is a list of the 19 entrants for that second ever Sydney to Hobart Race, and a few pictures from the start on Sydney Harbour
