Passionate Young Shipwrights

APPRENTICESHIP AVAILABLE!

We fill many column inches here at SWS with stories looking back at the past. Too many perhaps. So its a pleasure to be able to tell you about a business that is young and growing and all about the future of wooden boats.

Tasmanian Shipwrights and Co is situated at the Oyster Cove Marina in Kettering, and was formed in August 2023, so its just a year old!

It’s owned and run by three equal partners, Jon Minnebo, Matt Stevens and Nathan O’Neill, who all bring their own diverse background to the business.

They are currently working on a range of projects from the restoration of two historic Derwent Class Yachts (GREMLIN & MERMAID), to a major refit on a 32ft Cayzer built motor Launch, to restoration of TRADITION, a 40ft strip planked Huon pine yacht being prepared for the two handed division in the Sydney to Hobart.

One of the main catalysts for starting the company was to sustain and grow the art of wooden boatbuilding by passing on the skills they have accumulated. It’s a shared passion within the company to keep the skills of wooden boat building alive for generations to come.

So following on from a busy and exciting first year they are looking to take on their first apprentice!

The person they are looking for to join the team (male or female) should ideally posses the following qualities:

⁃    Passion for boats and woodworking
⁃    Strong work ethic
⁃    Show initiative and a hunger to learn
⁃    Be able to work as part of a team
⁃    A sound understanding of mathematics
⁃    Be punctual and respectful
⁃    Have a drivers license

The apprenticeship will cover all aspects of modern and traditional wooden boat building and restoration.

To apply please send you resume and cover letter to contact@tasmanianshipwrights.com
