Branding the Cloth

A couple of weekends ago, while covering the Inverloch Classic Dinghy Regatta for SWS, I was struck by the history and retro design encapsulated in the sew on logos of the sailmakers from the 1950’ 60’s &70’s.

Here in Australia we are not quite at the historical level of the famous Ratsey & Lapthorn loft from Cowes in the Solent. In 1795 Lord Collingwood was a strong advocate of what he saw as the better sails coming from Ratsey's. Some of which were flown on HMS Victory by Lord Nelson in 1805 at the battle of Trafalgar. The top sail remains in the British Naval museum complete with cannon ball holes!

However, some of the sails out there on Anderson Inlet were a little older than your correspondent and arguably in much better condition!

We would love to hear from some of our readers with pictures of the logo’s of their traditional sailmakers,

Then perhaps in the future we can publish a full selection of these graphic design gems!

Here are a few examples to get you started… Click to enlarge.
